My first impression is ... wow! how easy. Instead of lifting the knees, stretching forward, striking the heel and slapping the forefoot down you touchdown gently on the forefoot with a bent knee and spring forward and up somewhat like a kangaroo. Leaning forward, your next foot just naturally appears ready to touchdown without effort.

I may try this for a while. But there is no way I am ditching the shoes! My heart takes a while to get beating fast if I go out conservatively (e.g. I can go out at 7:30 pace and stay in the 140-155 range for a long while) but once I cross into the 160-170 range my heart will not go much slower for a long time even if I am running easy downhill.

Notice the heart rate rise as I went up the hill to Kohls. The 5K that I run on weekends has too much traffic to do on work mornings and I just like being close to home.
Joe ran too. We ran the first mile together in 7:48. At the end of the first mile, Ben started running his mile and I followed him at a faster pace and completed mile two in 6:38. My last 1.1 miles I did in 7:40.18 (which is 7:32pace) for a total of (7:48+6:38+7:40) 22:07. Following somebody faster really helps. I like to get Ben and Joe to trade off half miles and help me to break 20 minutes one day this week. (Joe by the way completed 5K today in 25:11, a good run for the little guy.)

I was very comfortable this morning, never gasping but I was breathing very deep and steady. I don't know my heart rate (wish I did) but I imagine I could keep up 7:40 pace for a 10K.

My goal being 19:59.9, I was 2:07 behind. Thats a lot of time. If I take one off the first and last mile I would be at 20:07. But I would have been dying. I will get there, its just going to take time.

squeezed one in

rained all day. with the sun setting i ran one mile (6:17) just before
sunset. i had forgotten how beautiful a sunset can be after a rain.

Sunday Rest

No running Yesterday. Based on reviews the only drawbacks I heard of are:
       1. Altitude not correct most of the time.
       2. Calories not computed correctly
       3. Replacing the rechargeable battery requires returning it to Garmin

I will have to see if I can get one.

Getting Started

I kept in shape through high school and college always being involved in sports and outdoor activities that kept me moving. But after college, my focus became work and family and the only sports related activity I routinely did involved sitting on a bench cheering for the kids.

In September, my kids (9 of my 11) started talking about running to get in shape for a mile race on the Friday after Thanksgiving. To get in shape we all started running a mile each weekday morning. Initially it was very painful to run even one 7 minute mile.

Sometime during November I realized that I was starting to enjoy it. My 40th birthday was on Thanksgiving, and I decided to celebrate it by running a 5k (with as many of the kids as possible).

Seven of us signed up and six ran (4 ran the 5K and 2 ran a 2K fun run.) It was a blast. I ran the first mile in 9 minutes with my 11-year-old, and then left him and finished in 23:54 (7th in my age group out of 40 40-44 year old men.
MALE Age Group: 40 - 44
1 xxxxx 42 Reston VA 19:10
2 xxxxx 42 Ashburn VA 20:48
3 xxxxx 40 Chesapeake VA 23:00

I was amazed that I could even place 7th. I realized that there were just no fast runners in the age group, but it was a lot of fun to compete and I decided to try to get faster.

Since then I have been running between one and three miles each morning and trying to push myself to get into shape. A few weeks ago I ran a flat 5K in 20:55. I mapped out a hilly 5K circuit and have been running it on Saturdays. Last week I finished in 20:47. Today I ran a mile 5:51.

My running goals for 2007 are to run a 5K in under 20 minutes and to run a mile in 5:30. Eventually I want to run a 5K in under 19 minutes and a mile under 5.

We will see how it goes.
